Senior Citizens Honor John Raese
Raese Receives Ben Franklin Award
(MORGANTOWN, WV) – The head of a national non-partisan senior citizens group recently presented the Benjamin Franklin Award to U.S. Senate candidate of West Virginia John Raese because “John Raese has pledged to repeal the terrible ‘death’ tax.”
60 Plus Association Chairman Jim Martin noted, “It was Franklin who famously said there are two certainties in life, death and taxes, but because of the estate or ‘death’ tax, there is a third certainty – taxes after death. 60 Plus decided to give a Benjamin Franklin award to those who support repeal. It is with a great deal of pride that 60 Plus honors John Raese with the Benjamin Franklin Award because if Raese has his way, we will get rid of that third certainty—taxes after death—and make Mr. Franklin’s famous quote accurate once again.”
On April 13, 2005, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 8 by a 110 vote margin, 272-162, to repeal the death tax. Over 40 Democrats, including eight members of the Congressional Black Caucus, voted to abolish this anti-business tax.
The Senate vote was 57 for repeal, falling three votes short. This explains that while repeal passed the House, the tax is still on the books.
“West Virginians aren’t taxed too much, career politicians in Washington are spending too much. If elected to the United States Senate I will fight to lower taxes for everyone, abolish the death tax and rein in out of control spending,” John Raese said.
The 60 Plus Association is a 20-year-old nonpartisan organization working for death tax repeal, saving Social Security and Medicare, affordable prescription drugs, lowering energy costs and other issues featuring a less government, less taxes approach as well as a strict adherence to the Constitution. 60 Plus calls on support from over 7 million activists. 60 Plus publishes a newsletter, SENIOR VOICE, and a Scorecard, bestowing awards on lawmakers of both parties who vote “pro-senior.” 60 Plus has been called, “an increasingly influential senior citizen’s group.”
