John Raese Statement On News Consol Energy Will Layoff 145 People

MORGANTOWN, WV – United States Senate candidate John Raese today released the following statement in response to news that Consol Energy will lay off 145 workers in southern West Virginia due to a permit dispute:

“West Virginia has long produced the energy that helped make our nation what it is today.  But our nation, and in turn West Virginia, is under attack. These 145 West Virginia families are just the latest casualties in President Obama’s War on Coal.”

“This is a battle that can be won, but not without new leaders in Washington.  I have no doubt Joe Manchin loves West Virginia, but his mere presence in Washington enables President Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to destroy West Virginia’s way of life.”

“As long as there is a President Obama and a Senator Manchin, anti-coal crusaders like Harry Reid and San Francisco liberal Senator Barbara Boxer will control the agenda, the centerpiece of which is the War on Coal.”

“Sen. Manchin may not like it, and he even may oppose it, but he is incapable of doing anything to stop it.”

“The only way we win the War on Coal is by electing Mitt Romney president, and John Raese to the Senate.”

Yesterday, the Charleston Daily Mail reported that Consol Energy told 145 workers in southern West Virginia that it will start laying them off in late December due to a permit dispute related to the King Coal Highway project.

“The facility has operated without a lost-time accident since 1986, an exemplary safety record for the mining industry, and it is unfortunate that they will not be afforded the opportunity to extend that record,” Consol President Nicholas J. DeIuliis said in a statement.

Since President Obama took office, nearly 100 West Virginia coal mines have stopped producing coal.  At the end of 2008, there were 264 coal mines producing coal.  As of May 2012, the Manchin-Obama War on Coal had reduced that number to 174.  Coal power plants are going out of business.  Coal companies such as Patriot are filing for bankruptcy protection.  Coal stocks are at an all-time low. And West Virginians are losing their jobs.

Where has Joe Manchin been in all of this?

“I am incensed and infuriated that the EPA would intentionally delay the needed permit for a public-private project that would bring so many good jobs and valuable infrastructure to communities that so desperately need them,” said Sen. Joe Manchin.

Sen. Manchin claims that he will stand up for coal, but he refuses to speak with President Obama about his coal crushing agenda.  Thanks to Barack Obama’s EPA, thousands of West Virginians have already been casualties in the War on Coal.

There is no way Barack Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid are going to address this situation, and Joe Manchin knows that.

Joe Manchin could go see the President at any time, but as reported by Jared Hunt at the Daily Mail, Sen. Manchin admitted he hadn’t spoken to the president since his election to the U.S. Senate in November 2010.

Under the leadership of Obama, Reid, and Manchin, West Virginia is on the path to bankruptcy.

It’s not just coal jobs that are fading.  According to U.S. Department of Labor, West Virginia lost 10,000 jobs last month and unemployment ticked up a tenth of a percent, from 7.5% to 7.6%.

Under the leadership of Barack Obama and Joe Manchin, West Virginia has taken a serious hit.  If we don’t change this situation, tens of thousands more will suffer the same fate in the next four years.  If we want to grow the economy and create jobs, we have to change the lineup in Washington.

The choice could not be any clearer.

If we are going to correct all the disastrous policies that Barack Obama has implemented on Joe Manchin’s watch, we need 51 Republican Senators.

If we send 51 Republican Senators to Washington in 2012, we can save coal.

Together we’ve got a chance to turn back the tide before it is too late. We need Mitt Romney in the White House and John Raese in the U.S. Senate so we can FINALLY get a new result from Washington.
